The steering universal joint coupling, or simply steering u-joint, is a small but important part of the steering system. The steering u-joints are needed to transfer the steering force from the steering wheel to the steering rack at an angle. To ensure maximum uptime, our most in-demand part numbers are in-stock and ready to ship. Most modern cars are equipped with a Rack and Pinion steering system . To accommodate the steering tilt and telescope function, as well as for crash safety, the steering shaft must be collapsible and rotate at an angle. Most cars have two u-joints in the steering shaft. In some cars, the u-joints are integral parts of the intermediate steering shaft. The top u-joint connects the intermediate shaft to the steering column.

Borgeson single universal joints will operate smoothly at angles up to 35°. Angles over 35° can be accommodated by using a double universal joint. Still, many steering couplers feature a more traditional U-joint as well. That’s especially true for performance applications and for off-roaders that demand more robust steering system components. Perhaps more importantly, off-roaders often like to run larger tires and, when driven over rough terrain, it can wreak havoc on a steering shaft. In these instances, a stronger, upgraded steering shaft coupler can help ensure your day on the trails doesn’t end with a walk out of the brush.

The most common problem with steering u-joints is when grease in one of the needle bearings dries out or when moisture causes corrosion . Often, this problem happens to the lower steering shaft u-joint, as it's located inside the engine bay, see these photos fig 1, fig 2. A faulty u-joint can cause looseness or stiffness felt in the steering wheel.
